Associate ESL Program Director

Virginia International University has an opening for a full-time Associate ESL Program Director, to start on June 2, 2008.

The Associate Director will provide general program assistance to the ESL Program Director, particularly with placement tests and special events. S/he will also have full responsibility for designing and coordinating short-term ESL programs and, eventually, a part-time evening ESL program for working professionals. In addition, the Associate Director will teach either one core ESL course or two ESL electives every semester.   

Minimum qualifications:

  • MA in TESOL (MA candidates are also encouraged to apply)
  • 2+ years of ESL teaching experience
  • An ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  • Strong writing and computer skills

Strong preference will be given to candidates with program management and/or online teaching experience

Administrative Assistant for Provost

Virginia International University is currently has job opening for an Administrative Assistant for the Provost. The applicant must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in any business field. The ideal candidate must be able to carry out tasks to completion with little supervision, be adept at verbal and written English, and must possess exemplary organizational skills, as well as strong computer and internet research skills. Related experience is preferable.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Performs administrative duties for executive management.

  • Relieves management of administrative detail, coordinates work flow
  • Composes correspondence/reports for management, arranges essential mail in priority action order.
  • Handles all phone calls, screens and routes them where needed.
  • Maintains calendar; ascertain which events require management attendance.
  • Assists with grant research and development

International Student Advisor

Virginia International University’s Office of International Student Affairs seeks an experienced and energetic international student and scholar adviser to serve the needs of a growing population of 300+ international undergraduate and graduate students.

This position serves as VIU’s designated school official for the F visa programs for SEVIS and other reporting; keeps current on all relevant CIS and DOS regulations and procedures; reports to the Dean of Students; advises on and issues visa documents for all F students; processes employment authorizations(OPT and CPT), reduced course load, extensions of stay, reinstatements to status, documents for dependents, etc.; organizes and participates in orientation programs; prepares handouts, assists in developing and implementing international student activities and support; maintains the international student website; and other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.  The minimum requirements are a bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of successful university-level experience in visa and personal advising of international students, and a thorough knowledge of relevant federal regulations and procedures. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills and writing abilities, and demonstrated successful experience in international student programming. Office experience in all of the following areas is required:  database management, SEVIS reporting, word processing, spreadsheet use, electronic calendaring and desktop publishing.

The preferred requirements are a master’s degree in a relevant field of study, at least five years of relevant university-level experience in international student advising and programming, experience in SEVIS reporting, significant overseas living and study/work experience, and proficiency in a foreign language.

Admissions Counselor

VIU is currently seeking a full time Admissions Counselor to provide admissions counseling and services for prospective students, to actively help recruit a diverse group of freshman, to evaluate admissions credentials, and to assist the admissions team.

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required + some admissions experience
  • Must possess outstanding communication, organizational skills, and be able to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Must be enthusiastic, motivated, and willing to work with the admissions team
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment required
  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must be a native speaker of English
  • Knowledge and experience in DSO a major plus.

FT Professor & Administrator position in the Business Programs Department (BPD)

VIU is seeking to fill a FT/PT Professor & Administrator position in the Business Programs Department (BPD)

  • Education: Masters Degree from an accredited college or university and 18 hours in a major subject area
  • Experience: professional work experience in a corporate setting or other organization will be a plus.
  • Skills: Must speak and write English at a high level and have excellent organizational skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets a necessity.
  • Associate should have good communication skills and be able to carry projects through to completion with minimal supervision.

Job-Specific Duties Include:
Under general supervision, coordinates, oversees, and/or performs a wide variety of administrative and program support activities for the Business Programs Department Chair of the University and for related, centralized activities. Serves as primary point of operational and administrative contact for internal and external contacts, often on complex and confidential issues.

  • Assist BPD Chair in redesigning curricula and conducting research as assigned and assist in scheduling classes
  • Implementing new concentrations and majors
  • Teach up to two classes as assigned
  • Maintain and update Business Programs web site
  • Assist in conducting evaluations and assist in scheduling same
  • Assist BPD chair in organizing faculty meetings and serving as recording secretary for department and Curriculum Review Committee meetings
  • Organize department files and documents (syllabi, exams, etc.)
  • Assist BPD chair with clerical/secretarial tasks (photocopies, correspondence, filing), and co-managing student assistant
  • Assist BPD chair in selecting textbooks
  • Verify credentials and gather references for prospective instructors
  • Assist BPD chair in organizing materials and records for accreditation
  • Distribute and collect end-of-semester teacher reports on student progress
  • Assist BPD chair in student placement and exit activities; must be competent and comfortable in making presentations to senior managers

FT/PT faculty member for Computer Programs Department

The Computer Program faculty is responsible for providing quality instruction to students ensuring student satisfaction through classroom or laboratory setting according to the program objectives.

  • Teach material from approved curriculum and develops lessons plans to include instructional aids for our computer programs.
  • Motivates students to participate in all aspects of the educational process.
  • Participates in school retention initiatives by providing regular, accurate attendance records daily, calling students who are absent and recording absentee information on a roster after each class and communicating attendance “concerns” to the Program Chair.
  • Availability for day and evening classes may be required.

Requirements: Master’s degree required, PhD preferred; industry certification is a plus; excellent organizational and written/oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal, influencing and presentation skills; ability to utilize a variety of teaching styles, methods in delivering course material to accommodate diverse learning styles of students.

ESL Instructors

VIU currently has openings for instructors in the ESL Program. The position is part time, and the hours are somewhere between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Classes are held Mondays through Thursdays, each at one to two intervals per week. ESL courses include pronunciation, speaking and listening, grammar, reading and writing, and content-based electives at all levels of English language proficiency: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. Qualified applicants must have TESL, TESOL, or equivalent credentials and experience, as well as an interest in working with a very diverse community of learners.
