Chairman of Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Speaks at VIU

Fairfax, VA -September 1, 2002 - Ms. Katherine Hanley, Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, addressed the students and faculty on Thursday, August 29th at Virginia International University's monthly luncheon. Ms. Hanley, who was first elected to the Board in 1995, discussed current issues involving Fairfax County and the community as a whole.

"Ms. Hanley delivered a gracious speech to the staff and students about issues ranging from local transportation to property taxes in Fairfax County," said Dr. Bishnu Poudel, Vice President of VIU. "We are honored by her presence and we know that our students learned a lot more about their new community from such a distinguished guest."

In addition, Ms. Hanley fielded questions from staff and students, and responded to the upcoming referendum vote on a ½ cent raise in sales tax to balance the local budget. She then met with the university's administration and enjoyed a light lunch courtesy of the university.

Ms. Hanley has been active in local politics for over twenty years. She has been an educator, a businesswoman and a member of numerous boards and committees serving the public interests in Fairfax County. Ms. Hanley has also won many civic and professional awards throughout her career.

Virginia International University is home to students from all over the world. It is an independent, non-profit university that offers courses in computers, business and English language proficiency. It currently has students from over 15 different countries from around the world.
