Glenn Arkin

Spring 2008 will be Mr. Arkin’s first semester at VIU.  In addition to facilitating instruction here, he will continue his role as adjunct ESL faculty at a Washington-area community college, where he has been giving advanced ESL reading and writing courses and tutoring individual students through the school’s writing center.  His eight years of ESL experience include the coordination of an academic CALL (computer-assisted language lab) center, two years as an instructor in one of the nation’s first public charter schools for adult immigrants, vocational ESL training for the U.S. Navy, and a stint as a certified IELTS examiner.

Glenn grew up in Chevy Chase and Bethesda, both Maryland suburbs. He achieved a B.A. in Theatre Arts from American University and holds a Teacher of English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate from Lado International College. In addition to teaching, he enjoys hiking, biking and travel, and is a bit of an editor in his spare time. During the upcoming VIU semester Mr. Arkin will be teaching an elementary pronunciation course, along with one entitled “Brilliant Essays in 30 minutes,” a TOEFL writing preparation class. He is a huge advocate of student-centered classroom dynamics and emphasizes developing solid fundamentals and critical thinking skills as ways for students to realize long-lasting academic success.
