Student Profile: TIA PILLAY
When I came to the United States from South Africa as an exchange student in an au-pair program, I had doubts about studying English as a second language. Honestly, I thought it could be a bit boring and I just started off to obtain credits in order to complete the requirements of the cultural exchange program that I’m currently in. However, after studying two ESL courses at Virginia International University, I feel quite different now. It has been such an amazing experience for me, for several reasons.
To begin with, VIU is a small university, so it gets really advantageous for students. It has such a friendly and dynamic faculty and staff. They always try their best to help you. The class size is usually small, so you can easily ask for clarification to your teachers. You even have a chance to socialize with your teachers out of the class here. In addition, you get to meet a lot of different cultures, since most of VIU’s students come from all over the world.
Last but not least, VIU is a very active university, when it comes to the campus life. The good thing is that you study in Fairfax, a very peaceful and safe area of Virginia, but you always have access to the active and colorful lifestyle of Washington DC, which is pretty near. I remember feeling really excited about most of the student activities that VIU announced so far, such as canoeing in Potomac River; trips to New York and nearby areas; ice skating; spooky Halloween parties; movie nights; ice-cream social; picnics; all sorts of sports activities, X-box tournaments, and so on. Here, in one of the most beautiful areas of the United States, you can expand your perspective while having a great time with your friends.
I will never forget my experience at Virginia International University. Studying here at VIU has been such an enlightening journey for me. I see VIU as a foundation for guaranteed success.
