Health Insurance

About Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for all international students enrolled at Virginia International University (VIU). It is also mandatory to purchase the health insurance offered through the university. VIU has partnered with Global Secutive, LLC to offer our students affordable health care. Global Secutive is a fully licensed US insurance agency which provides insurance products for the intercultural exchange market. To maximize benefits and convenience, Global Secutive has partnered with United Healthcare to create a reasonable and comprehensive health insurance policy for international students.

Insurance Plan Options

VIU students may choose between two travel health insurance plans:

  1. Plan A: Basic travel insurance plan costing $2/day with no preventive services.
  2. Plan B: More comprehensive family plan costing approximately $4/day (depends on the age of the individual) which includes additional services such as preventive care, maternity coverage, etc.

Purchasing Health Insurance & Payments

Plan A can be purchased in VIU’s Accounting Office, located in the Waples Building (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). To enroll into Plan B, please go the company website and enroll directly. You will then need to submit your certificate/insurance details of Plan B enrollment to Ms. Claudia Trower in the Accounting Office in order to have the appropriate fees waived from your tuition payment.

Students pay for health insurance every semester along with tuition. A health insurance officer in the Accounting Office will be sure you are enrolled and that your policy is active. You will also be provided with a health insurance card.

If you do not take summer semester classes, you will have the option of suspending your health insurance; if you suspend your health insurance, you will not be enrolled in the health insurance plan and will not be required to make payments.

IMPORTANT: If you decide not to extend your policy during the summer semesters (or delay in making your payment), your existing insurance policy will expire and you will have to be enrolled in a new policy. When you enroll in a new policy, any treatment obtained under the previous policy will not be covered in the new policy. Thus, the ideal thing to do is pay for health insurance along with your tuition at least a month before your current policy ends in order to ensure all of your currently treated conditions will continue to be treated.
