Congratulations! Now that you have enrolled in the final semester of your study, you need to apply for graduation.
Please keep in mind that graduation is NOT automatic. It is your responsibility to submit an online Application for Graduation in your Student Portal. You MUST complete the online application whether you attend the annual May commencement ceremony or not.
The online graduation application involves several departments at VIU. Early application is encouraged to allow time for a complete record check and avoid any delays.
Please see below the sequence of the application process.
|1. Student logs into student portal, completes, and submits graduation application online.|
|2. Academic Advisor reviews application. The application may be approved or denied. If approved, the application will move to the Career Center stage.||5. Student MUST pay any remaining dues to the Accounting Office, and return any books that have been borrowed to the Library before the end of the semester.|
|3. Student schedules a session with Career Center and attends this for the application to move to the Registrar’s Office stage.||6. The Registrar’s Office will send an automatic message to the student’s campus email so that a preferred delivery method can be selected for the diploma.|
|4. Registrar’s Office reviews, approves or denies the application. If approved, a student applying for OPT may also get a signature from the Registrar’s Office at this point.||7. The Registrar’s Office will send a second email to the student’s campus email when the graduation package is ready to be picked up from the Registrar’s Office, and when mailed out as requested by the student.|
Follow These Steps to begin your online application
- Log in to the student portal at https://portal.viu.edu/student.
- In the left menu under the Student Portal section click “Graduation Application Form.”
- You will be presented with a page containing information about submitting the graduation application. Please be sure to read all of the instructions carefully before clicking “Continue” to begin your application.
Please remember, in order to graduate from Virginia International University, you must fulfill all program, academic, financial, and university requirements. All requirements will be verified by your school and the Registrar’s Office. If you do not meet these requirements, you will not be awarded a degree. The university has a graduation appeals process to consider written appeals from students who do not meet all requirements.
In order to have your diploma/certificate issued, submit your completed graduation application online by the following dates:
- Students who complete degree requirements by the end of the Fall Semester: October 1st
- Students who complete degree requirements by the end of the Spring Semester: February 1st
- Students who complete degree requirements by the end of the Summer Semester I: June 3rd
- Students who complete degree requirements by the end of the Summer Semester II: August 1st
Students should meet the following minimum requirements to be qualified for a degree:

The fee for applying for graduation is $150 for both graduate and undergraduate students if paid by the deadline, and $200 after the deadline.
Records are sealed at graduation. No changes may be made to the academic record (transcript) after the degree has been awarded. All obligations, whether academic or financial, must be cleared before your records will be released. Please keep in mind that diplomas may be available 6 weeks after all final grades have been accepted and graduation verification has been completed. An automatic message will be sent out to your campus email so that you may choose the delivery method of your preference for your graduation package.
Cancellation of Graduation Application
If you decide to postpone your graduation, please contact the Registrar’s Office. Students whose applications get cancelled must reapply for graduation in order to be considered for a subsequent semester.
The commencement ceremony information, which includes instructions for purchasing a cap and gown, will be emailed to applicants by the Student Affairs Office sometime in March. The commencement ceremony is held once a year, after the end of Spring semester.
