Unrestricted funds comprise less than ten percent of donations, yet give VIU’s leaders unparalleled ability to meet immediate needs while preparing to achieve long-term goals. All unrestricted gifts serve to advance VIU’s mission to educate students from all over the world through a highly qualified, equally diverse faculty and staff, while striving to provide academic programs at the graduate, undergraduate, and certificate levels that engender the intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity urgently needed in the global community and with a commitment to providing students with the knowledge to achieve excellence in research, scholarship, and creative endeavors.
Endowments are permanent funds in which the principal is held in perpetuity and only the investment income is expended annually. Endowment gifts provide long-term sources of funding for the University. Endowed funds support activities not just for one year, or even one generation, but forever. Endowment funds are invested prudently to ensure they can sustain current and future needs. Benefits of establishing an endowment include, a permanent named tribute, providing for future generations, and providing lasting stability for VIU research, faculty, and student support. Endowment support areas include, named capital additions/improvements, student scholarship, and faculty research.
An Estate/Bequest Gift is a provision in your will or living trust that directs a portion of your estate to a named person or charity such as Virginia International University Foundation. You may bequeath a specific asset, a dollar amount, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after all other gifts have been distributed. You may choose how the funds from your bequest gift will be utilized by Virginia International University.
Another way to support VIU is through gifts of tangible personal property. When a gift relates to the “charitable purpose” of VIU, you may be able eligible for a deduction equal to the full fair market value of that item. Gifts-in-kind include: computer equipment, automobiles, furnishings, precious minerals, and machinery.
Gifts of appreciated securities can provide special tax advantages including: a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift and; avoidance of capital gains taxes. VIU accepts a number of appreciated securities including: stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. The simplest and most efficient way to make a gift of any security is to instruct your broker or banker to transfer the security to The Virginia International University Foundation.
Gifts of real estate are sold quickly and converted into cash or used directly in connection with an existing University program. The sale of Foundation real estate differs from University owned properties because Foundation properties can be listed with a broker and do not require an auction to confirm or close the sale. VIU will accept, vacant land, residential property, and/or commercial property. Improved property with mortgages can be accepted if the loan is 50% or less of the appraised value and can be sold quickly.
