Honorable Mention Recognition

On July 4th, VIU participated in the City of Fairfax’s 51stAnnual Independence Day Parade.  The parade is the largest in Northern Virginia and was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the University.The hard work and long hours from VIU staff paid off as VIU received an Honorable Mention for our float.  Congratulations to the Student Affairs department and to all who helped put everything together!

Ice Cream Social

To celebrate National Ice Cream Day (July 16th), VIU hosted a surprise ice cream social for its employees on Monday, July 17th.  Following a scheduled fire drill, employees gathered in the back of the building to enjoy the special treat on a particularly hot day. While the fire drill on July 17th was only practice, it is important for all employees to know what to do and where to go in the case of an emergency.Please take the time to check the evacuation plan on the back of your office door and become familiar with what zone you are in and where you are supposed to meet in…

Company Picnic Fun

This year’s company picnic was bigger and better than last year with an obstacle course, face painter, caricature artists, balloon twister, and a petting zoo!  VIU employees invited their families to enjoy the fun and we all had a great time!A huge thank you goes out to the Facilities team and the student staff who helped make this year great – the food was a hit, and we couldn’t have done it without you!This year, along with our annual raffle for door prizes, Courtney Hill coordinated a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the VIU Scholarship Fund.  Camilla Nunes was the lucky winn…

Corporate FunRun 5K: We ran, we walked, we danced, we laughed!

Last month, VIU participated in our first Corporate FunRun in Chantilly, VA, and our team had a great time!  Thank you to all of the staff members who participated this year.  We are happy to announce that we raised money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society AND we won Second Largest Team!  We can’t wait for next year!Congratulations to Takaki Matsumoto for being VIU’s top runner and for placing in the top 50 male runners (out of 142) in just under 32 minutes.

Fitness Classes

Get in shape over your lunch break!Starting next Monday, June 12th, the Wellness Works committee will be hosting fitness classes Monday through Friday from 12:30pm – 1:30pm in VD-102!  Workout sessions are typically 30 minutes long, so you should still have time to eat!Come join us for one, two, or all five days per week on your lunch break – it is up to you and your schedule.  We will have a variety of different classes, ranging from yoga to aerobics taught by fitness trainers (via DVD).  For a closer look at the fitness class schedule, check the staff bulletin board on…

Birthday LeaveFull-time employees are eligible to receive one day of paid leave for their birthday.  Birthday Leave should be taken during the month of the birthday.Lunch BreaksNon-Exempt employees are required to clock in and out via the punch clock on a daily basis.  This includes clocking in and out for your lunch period.  No non-exempt employee should be working over 40 hours/week without prior approval from HR.
