SLUG: Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra Agrees to speak at Virginia International
University’s November 1 Scholarship Fundraising Dinner and Auction

RELEASE: For Immediate Release

Fairfax, Virginia: Aneesh Chopra, the Secretary of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia, has just agreed to be the keynote speaker at Virginia International University’s November 1 Scholarship Fundraising Dinner and Auction. Secretary Chopra leads the Commonwealth’s strategy to leverage technology effectively in government reform, promotes Virginia’s innovation agenda, and fosters technology-related economic development with a special emphasis on entrepreneurship. “We are thrilled that Secretary Chopra has agreed to be the speaker at our scholarship fundraiser because technology is a topic that is so near and dear to all of us at Virginia International University,” says the university’s president, Dr. Isa Sarac. Virginia International University (VIU) offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in computer science and business administration and emphasizes technology in its curriculum, Sarac explains. “Secretary Chopra’s work and insights are of great importance and there’s not a person among us who is not touched by technology every day. I’m sure that everyone who comes to our fundraiser will be interested in what he has to say,” Sarac adds.

VIU’s scholarship fundraising dinner and auction will be held at the Marriott Fairfax at Fair Oaks, 11787 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway in Fairfax. The Thursday evening program, which begins at 6:00 p.m., includes an elegant reception and dinner, a silent and live auction of attractive donated goods and services, and international musical entertainment. Russian violinist Iourienen Innes will greet guests with classical solo works and after dinner, Guillermo Verde will sing traditional and contemporary Honduran cowboy ballads. Verde, a performing artist, serves as the cultural attaché for the embassy of Honduras. “We are all in for a great treat on November 1 and our program should be lively and offer something for everyone,” says Ron Hubbard, chair of VIU’s Development Committee and host of the scholarship fundraising dinner and auction.

Tickets for the event are $125 and may be reserved by contacting Tina Segismundo at 703-591-7042, ext. 304, tina@viu.edu. Segismundo can also provide information about event sponsorship and donations for the silent and live auctions. Virginia International University is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation and donations to the university are tax deductible.

“You can’t imagine how extremely important scholarships are to our students,” says Dr. K. Habib Khan, VIU’s provost. “Every penny we raise at our fundraising dinner and auction will go directly toward the tuition of deserving students,” he says. Khan explains that for many VIU students, a scholarship means the difference between being able to study or not.

“This will be an incredible evening. Secretary Chopra is a fantastic speaker and a real dynamo. The musical entertainment, the auction, and the dinner are all first-rate,” Khan says. He adds that VIU is counting on strong participation in this event from the community to raise the scholarship funds that are so needed by VIU students. “We encourage everyone to be a part of this magical evening,” Khan says. “We’re going to do a lot of good for VIU students and we’ll all take part in a beautiful, meaningful, and memorable event. Please, come join us.” ###
