Dean’s Message

Dear Friends, Alumni and Prospective Students,

Welcome to VIU’s School of Education!  VIU has continued to make a commitment to providing high demand programs in an effort to support a competent, scholarly and well-equipped workforce both locally and globally.  Nelson Mandela once said that “education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”  This exemplifies both what it means to be a VIU student and a student within the School of Education.  VIU students work tirelessly to make the world a better place in everything that they do and benefit from a unique learning experience with classmates who represent a global community.

The School hosts several graduate-level programs including a Master of Arts Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA in TESOL) and the Graduate Certificate in TESOL, and a Master of Science in Applied Linguistics.

The School of Education will prove to be both a diverse and supportive part of VIU’s endeavor to strive for quality, academic excellence. This is a large goal and without the tremendous efforts and support of the faculty and staff, our mission would be impossible to achieve. The faculty of the School of Education have a wealth of knowledge in their subject areas including primary and secondary education, second language studies, instructional design, curriculum, assessment and teaching methodologies. Additionally, the School’s dedication to students, energy and passion for the subject matter and commitment to student success positions future graduates for current and future professional achievement.

Academic Excellence is first and foremost applied to everything that occurs within the school. The School’s curricula focus on providing meaningful and industry-driven experiences which are interwoven throughout all of the courses within the program to provide an education that is academically-sound, educationally-stimulating and fun.

It is indeed an exciting time at VIU and an extraordinary time in the field of education and second language studies!
