Admissions Requirements

Choose the application type (Domestic or International) and appropriate program below to explore the admissions requirements.

Prospective students who do not require an F-1 visa are considered Domestic Applicants. Domestic Applicants may hold one of the following statuses: US Citizenship, Permanent Residency (green card), visas including H1, H1B, H4, O, A, K, Jay Treaty, Political Asylum, and Refugee status.

Undergraduate

General Admissions Requirements

  • Online Application Form
  • $20 application fee (non-refundable)
  • Copy of US passport or US government-issued photo ID
  • High school diploma / GED or equivalency
    (excluding special diplomas, special education diplomas, modified diplomas, applied study diplomas, adjusted diplomas, alternative diplomas, certificates of completion/attendance/participation, etc.)

    Student must submit academic document of graduation from high school or its equivalent from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. In addition student submitting international education credential must provide an official evaluation from any member of AICE, AACRAO’s International services or NACES to validate equivalency with graduation from the high school and eligibility to enter university in the United States.

Graduate

General Admissions Requirements

  • Official bachelor’s degree diploma/certificate
  • Official bachelor’s degree transcript(s)
    The requirement for student admitted to program leading to a graduate degree, certificate, or diploma shall include graduation from bachelor’s degree program or its equivalent from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with a minimum Grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Student submitting international education credential must provide an official evaluation from any member of AICE, AACRAO’s International services, or NACES to validate equivalency with graduation from the undergraduate program and eligibility to admit in graduate program in university in the United States. Alternatively, students who might have an undergraduate CGPA between 2.30 and 2.49, but who have previous graduate work at a college or university equivalent to at least 9 credits and a CGPA greater than 3.0 would also demonstrate sufficient CGPA. Each graduate degree program requires submission of a Statement of Purpose (500 words), a Resume/CV, and one letter of recommendation (academic or professional).
  • Official language proficiency test scores.
    If primarily educated from the USA or EPR exempted countries need not be held for proof of English Proficiency.
  • Official Recommendations
    Official recommendations from professionals or academic who can speak to the candidate’s academic abilities (preferably from a current/former instructor or a current/former employer. All recommendations should be written in English or provide an official translation.
  • Academic Statement of Purpose
    500 word  statement defining the applicant’s academic interests, professional objectives, areas of interest to be explored in the program, and reasoning behind joining the program. The statement of purpose should demonstrate an understanding of the specific program to which the candidate is applying and make connections to the applicant’s eventual career aspirations. Statements must be written in English in the candidate’s own words.

  • Résumé/Curriculum Vitae
    Detailing current and/or previous work history and education. Previous work history is not a requirement for admission.

Transfer

If you wish to transfer to VIU, please submit the official transcript from your current college or university to the Registrar’s Office along with the documents required for the program you are applying for (see above). Learn more about VIU Transfer Policy and Procedure.
Foreign transcripts of international students seeking transfer credits must be evaluated by a member of AICE, AACRAO’s International services, or NACES.

English as a Second Language

  •  Online application form
  •  $20 application fee (non-refundable)
  •  Copy of US passport or US government-issued photo ID

Students who require an F-1 visa are considered International Applicants.

Undergraduate

  • Copy of passport
  • High school diploma / GED or equivalency

Transfer

If you are currently studying at a university or college in the United States and you wish to transfer to VIU, please submit the following documents along with the documents required for the program you are applying for (see above):

  • Official transcript from your current college or university
  • Copy of your F-1 student visa
  • Copy of your I-94
  • Copies of all previous I-20s
  • SEVIS Transfer Eligibility Form that needs to be completed by current school

English as a Second Language

International Students Bringing Dependents

If you are an international student planning to bring your spouse or child with you to the US, please submit the following documents in addition to the general requirements:

  • Copy of spouse’s passport
  • Copy of marriage certificate
  • Copy of child’s passport
  • Copy of child’s birth certificate

To submit your Admissions documents, please follow the instructions below:

  • Create and complete online application in Application Portal.
  • Scan original documents and upload to the Application Portal.
  • If any documents are issued in a language other than English, please provide both the original document and an official translation of the document in English.

(Submitting incomplete or incorrect documents may delay your Admissions process.)

Minimum Age Requirement

Any student who is not at least 18 years of age and has not yet received a high school diploma (or its equivalent) from a recognized institution on or before the first day of the semester will not be permitted to enroll in a degree program with Virginia International University.
Any student who is not at least 18 years of age, but who is a minimum of 16 and has received a high school diploma or its equivalent from a recognized institution must meet the following requirements before enrolling in a program with VIU.  As well as the student meeting all of the requirements for the program in which they are applying for, a parent or the legal guardian of the student must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must complete, and submit the Parent/Guardian Minor Consent Form (available in a student’s application portal)
  • Lives within commuting distance of VIU (not to exceed 50 miles)
  • Agrees to financially sponsor the student
  • Will provide housing for the student while they are under the age of 18

Please note: VIU has the right to request original documentation. Submission of fabricated or false documents will result in immediate dismissal of the application and will disqualify the individual from applying to VIU in the future. Documents submitted for admissions purposes will not be returned to the applicant.
