MISSION & OBJECTIVES

Our Mission Statement

The School of Language Studies supports the mission and philosophy of VIU by empowering its student population with the linguistic, academic, and intercultural communication skills necessary to become leaders in the global community.

Overview

The School of Language Studies offers instruction in English as a second language (ESL). The ESL program is founded on the general idea that better communication skills lead to a better world, and that successful communication includes not only language proficiency but also intercultural competence as well as an open and inquisitive mind. For this reason, all of our programs teach intercultural communication and critical thinking skills.

Objectives

The goal of the ESL program is to make students proficient in the types of oral and written communication required in American college classrooms. The program has a strong focus on academic skills.
The objectives of the program are to:

  • Communicate ideas and arguments in English clearly and effectively with various situations and audiences
  • Produce written work with coherent arguments and well-organized ideas following conventional formats
  • Utilize strategies to read academic and everyday texts with purpose
  • Synthesize information from different sources in order to convey ideas to others
