Our Mission Statement

The School of Language Studies supports the mission and philosophy of VIU by empowering its student population with the linguistic, academic, and intercultural communication skills necessary to become leaders in the global community.

Overview

The School of Language Studies offers instruction in English as a second language (ESL). The ESL program is founded on the general idea that better communication skills lead to a better world, and that successful communication includes not only language proficiency but also intercultural competence as well as an open and inquisitive mind. For this reason, all of our programs teach intercultural communication and critical thinking skills.

Objectives

The goal of the ESL program is to develop student proficiencies in the types of oral and written communication required for professional and academic success in English speaking contexts.
The objectives of the program are to:

  • Apply language skills to various communicative situations and audiences
  • Produce a variety of written work with clear arguments and well-organized ideas following academic formats
  • Use strategies to read academic and everyday texts with purpose
  • Communicate in English clearly and effectively
