The School of Language Studies supports the mission and philosophy of VIU by empowering its student population with the linguistic, academic, and intercultural communication skills necessary to become leaders in the global community.
The School of Language Studies offers instruction in English as a second language (ESL). The ESL program is founded on the general idea that better communication skills lead to a better world, and that successful communication includes not only language proficiency but also intercultural competence as well as an open and inquisitive mind. For this reason, all of our programs teach intercultural communication and critical thinking skills.
The goal of the ESL program is to make students proficient in the types of oral and written communication required in American college classrooms. The program has a strong focus on academic skills and TOEFL preparation. The objectives of the program are to:
- Help students attain their desired level of English language proficiency through intensive instruction in all skill areas.
- Help students develop strong academic communication skills necessary for the TOEFL examination and successful study at American institutions of higher education.
