What are the components of FXUA’s English Placement Test?
FXUA’s English Placement Test is a general language test that determines your English proficiency level. The test is computer-based and consists of four parts: grammar, reading, vocabulary, and writing.
Who can take FXUA’s English Placement Test?
If you come to FXUA to study and do not meet our English proficiency requirements, you must take our English placement test. The test will determine which level of our intensive ESL program is the right fit for you, or if your English is sufficient to enter into your degree program without additional ESL coursework. FXUA’s 7-week Intensive English Program for English language learners offers instruction at seven levels of proficiency from Level 0200 (Low Beginner) → Level 0800 (Advanced).
Do Non-Intensive students need to take the placement test?
No, non-intensive ESL students do not need to take the placement test. Only students studying in the Intensive ESL program need to take FXUA’s English Placement Test. Please see the non-intensive Frequently Asked Questions for more information.
How long does the test take?
The test takes approximately an hour and a half to two hours and is given by appointment only. Waiting times vary. To take the test on-campus, you should be present at the Village Drive building at least 20 minutes before the test starts. If you arrive after the test begins, the test proctor may ask you to reschedule your test.
How much does the test cost?
To take our English Placement test on-campus, the test fee is $30. Test appointments must be scheduled in advance. To take the test online at your convenience, the fee is $55. The fee may be paid to our Accounting Office with cash, credit card, or money order. It is recommended that you complete payment at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.
How can I schedule an appointment?
If you are taking the test on-campus, our test schedule opens one month before the semester start date. To schedule an appointment, please check in with the Admissions Office at FXUA located at 4401 Village Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030. You must schedule your appointment in person. Appointments will not be scheduled via email or over the phone.
If you are taking the test online, once you have paid the fee, you will be sent a link with information on scheduling the test. The test can then be taken whenever and wherever it is convenient for you. Please note you must have a stable Internet connection and webcam in order to take the test online.

How can I cancel or reschedule an appointment?
If you have an existing appointment for an on-campus test that you cannot attend, contact the Admissions Office at your earliest convenience to change your appointment time (you do not have to pay the testing fee again to reschedule your test.) Please note that placement test fees are non-refundable.
How do I learn my scores?
After the test is complete, you will receive an email explaining your level placement within the Intensive ESL program and your scores on each of the test components.
How long does it take to get my scores?
Score reports are sent out two-five business days after test completion.
Can I take the test again if I don’t like my scores?
If you wish to retake the English placement test, you may do so at an additional cost to you. Please contact your admissions representative if you want to schedule another exam. This must be completed prior to your enrollment in the Intensive ESL program. Please note that retaking the exam will likely not significantly alter your score. Additionally, once you have begun Intensive ESL classes, the placement test cannot be retaken as a substitute for level completion.
