VIU Leadership and Mentorship Program

Students have the opportunity to gain points through a variety of activities. Please see below.

  • Attending Club Events: Attending student club events is a great way to foster friendships and to be even more connected with the VIU community. Students will receive 40 points for attending the whole event, 20 points for attending half of the event and 10 points for attending a quarter of the event.
  • Attending Conferences: Conferences are a great way to network and to learn more about leadership or your specific specialty. When attending a conference outside of VIU, please submit supporting documents to the Student Affairs Department to show attendance. Students will get 40 points for attending a full-day conference and 20 points for a half-day.
  • Attending Seminars, Workshops, and other Campus Events: Attending seminars, workshops and other campus events is a good way to enhance learning and behavior and to deepen friendships. These seminars, workshops and campus events can include, but not limited to those offered by: Student Affairs, Career Services, Writing Center, Library, Individual schools/programs. Students will receive 60 points for attending the whole event; 30 points for attending half of the event, and 20 for attending a quarter of the event.
  • Being a Translator: Sometimes when new students come to the university English is not their native language, therefore it is helpful to the student and staff members to have another student who can translate the information that is needed to help the new student. Students will receive 75 points for each hour they assist with translating for a student.
  • Diversity Event Series: This series provides students an opportunity to learn more about LGBTQ communities, other cultures, ethnic groups, traditions, religions, and inclusion. Students will receive 100 points for attending the whole event; 75 points for attending half of the event, and 35 points for attending a quarter of the event.
  • Field Trips: Provide students the opportunity to see local landmarks significant to the U.S and to Virginia. The Student Affairs Department tries to have at least two field trips a month. Students will receive 80 points per field trip.
  • Honor Society Member: Joining honor societies is a great investment because it helps enhance your resume and can provide additional funding for school. Currently VIU has the following honor societies: Golden Key Honor Society, SCLA Honor Society, and Gamma Beta Phi Society. Students who become a member of a VIU recognized honor society will receive 150 points per honor society.
  • Initiating a New Club: Students are always welcomed and encouraged to start new clubs. Students who take the initiative to develop and carry out a new club will get 200 points for leading the club. Carrying out a new club means having at least one event per semester and maintaining at least five active members in the club. After each event, the student club leader is responsible for turning in the attendance sheet so all attendees can get attendance points.
  • Leading an Existing Club: Leading and maintaining the current student clubs is an important aspect of student engagement and leadership. Students who lead and maintain an existing club will get 150 points if they hold at least one club event per semester and maintain at least five active members. Student clubs are able to co-host events together. After each event, the student club leader is responsible for turning in the attendance sheet so all attendees can get attendance points.
  • Lunch and Learns: A variety of lunch and learns will be offered to students that will include, but not limited to, topics such as multiculturalism, inclusion, ethnicity, professional development, health and wellness, honor society information, etc. Students will receive 80 points for attending the whole event; 60 points for attending half the event; and 30 points for attending a quarter of the event.
  • Participating in Research Projects or Grants: Participating in research projects and/or grants is an important part of the college experience because it helps you grow as a student, builds relationships with faculty, and sets you up for success if you want to eventually continue your education by getting your Ph.D. Students who participate in research projects or grants will receive 200 points per project or grant. Students will need to submit supporting documentation to the Student Affairs Department to show proof of participation.
  • Participating in VIU Events: The Student Affairs Department hosts a variety of events and looks to have students be an active part of the events through either participating, presenting and/or performing during the event. Participant in an event can include, but is not limited to being the emcee, giving a presentation, being a speaker, dancing, singing, etc. Students who participate in a VIU campus event will get 85.
  • Refer a Friend to VIU (only for Student Staff): This is available for current VIU Student Staff. For each friend he/she refers to VIU and they complete one full semester at Virginia International University the student can earn points. Students must provide documentation provided by the accounting department in order to receive the points. Students will receive 300 points for each student he/she refers.
  • Social Media: Videos and social media are a great way to promote awareness about events and activities. Students will receive 30 points for participating in Student Affairs videos and/or providing testimonials about event/activities.
  • Sport Coach/Leader: Leading a sports team is a great way to share your skills and to enhance leadership skills. Student will receive 110 points for coaching/leading the VIU sport team for the full season + the participation points. The coach/leader must have at least two practices a month.
  • Sports Participation: Participating in sports is a great way to learn/enhance a skill, promote good health and to enhance friendships. Students will receive 60 points for each game they play and 35 points for each practice they attend.
  • Student Ambassadors: Student Ambassadors serve as mentors to new students. Student Ambassadors connect with students before the semester starts, participates in the new student orientation, and brings the new student to activities. Students who serve as an ambassador will receive 45 points per activity, which includes, but is not limited to singing up to be a student ambassador, sending welcome e-mail to new student, sending reminder e-mail to new student about new student orientation, attending new student orientation, and taking the new student to at least two events/activities.
  • Volunteering: Both on and off-campus volunteer events are available to students. Volunteering gives students a chance to be connected with VIU and the community at large. The Student Affairs Department sets up at least one volunteer opportunity a month. A minimum of a quarter of the duration of the event is required to volunteer in order to obtain the points. Students will receive 100 points per hour for volunteering on a weekday, 150 points for volunteering on the weekend, and 200 points for volunteering on holidays.

  • Being involved in these activities is a great way to add to your Resume! The skills you develop while engaging in these activities continue to build your Soft Skills – personal accountability, collaboration, interpersonal skills, adaptability, flexibility, clarity of communication, creative thinking, time management, motivation, teamwork, and mentoring/coaching.
  • By being involved in these activities, it also makes it easier to request Recommendation Letters and/or Professional References from the staff. The more you engage with the staff, the better they get to know you and can speak highly of you when you need a professional reference!
  • By being involved in the community and a variety of activities, students are able to make connections and network.

Minimum 4,980 points

  • Receive an award and be recognized by the Student Affairs Department at a VIU event
  • Students who obtain at least 4,980 points are eligible to apply for the Student Activities scholarship and be awarded up to $1,000
  • Students will be featured on the VIU website.
  • Students will receive recognition at graduation
  • Receive VIU merchandise

VIU Silver

3,980 – 4,979 points

  • Receive an award and be recognized by the Student Affairs Department at a VIU event
  • Students who obtain between 3,980 and 4,979 points are eligible to apply for the Student Activities Scholarship. The scholarship will be up to $500.00.
  • Students will be featured on the VIU website
  • Students will receive recognition at graduation

VIU Bronze

 2,880 – 3,979 points

  • Receive an award and be recognized by the Student Affairs Department at a VIU event
  • Students who obtain between 2,880 and 3,979 points are eligible to apply for the Student Activities Scholarship. The scholarship will be up to $250.00
  • Students will be featured on the VIU website
  • Students will receive recognition at graduation
