Jeffrey Prater, MSLS, MAT
Jeffrey Prater was promoted to Director of Library Services at Virginia International University in April 2016 after serving as the university’s librarian since November 2014. In 2016, Jeffrey presented his poster about a citation project done at VIU at the Virginia Library Association Annual Conference. He earned his Master of Science in Library Science from the Catholic University of America (2006) and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Willamette University (2000). The faculty at CUA nominated Jeffrey to the librarian honor society Beta Phi Mu in 2007 and he served as president of the local chapter in 2011. His academic awards include Who’s Who in College and University Students (1999), an Ethical Leadership Award (1999), and Most Valuable Leader of Model United Nations (1999). In addition, The Boys Scouts of America awarded Jeffrey with Eagle Scout (1989). He held many leadership positions serving as the longest tenured president of the CUA Alumni Association. As the Chair of the Potomac Valley Chapter Association for Information Science and Technology, Jeffrey led the group to three nationally recognized awards, including Chapter of the Year, Chapter Event of the Year, and Publication of the Year. Prior to VIU, Jeffrey managed non-profit and for-profit academic libraries. At the Library of Congress, Jeffrey served as contract project manager for the Baseline Inventory Program and Client Services Manager overseeing 40 employees on several different LOC projects. His expertise includes information literacy, collection development, reference, management, and technology.
